You have to install it: adding 'd3dx9_38.dll' into the Windows/System32 folder, like you did, doesn't seem correct to me. I had to Find the line: "bUseThreadedAI=0", change that 0 to a 1, and then add "iNumHWThreads=2" right after it all in the FALLOUT.INI file located in the Fallout 3 folder located in the documents folder for some reason.Dr.schliemann: The game requires DirectX 9.0c: I think you should find the DirectX redistributable package in game's installation folder, anyway you can also download it from here. Granted it was only two things, but I had difficulty understanding that there was more than one. and in the end I had to resort to reaching into the game files itself and changing something to get it to work.
I followed all the instructions on the Beth forum on what to do, run in administrator, update games for Windows, etc. Lucky, I had to go through a bunch of roadblocks to get it to work. That way it'll stay visible for folks to find. We could stiky it to the top of the FO3 forum. But I can't see it fitting in the mainspace. Regardless, I really think it would be of great help to many users out there who are trying to enjoy Fallout 3.
I'm open to ideas on how this page would be laid out and where it would be located. We could just have a bulleted list of fixes, and then ask users to verify if they work, or maybe if they work in unison with other fixes. I understand it would be very patchwork in nature, but having this information in one unified place would be a smart move in my mind. Thus, I think it would be of benefit to many if this wiki had a page with a list of all the different fixes and their success rates. I personally have spent hours scouring the internet searching for fixes before I finally got the game to work on my computer. I know the wiki tries to not cover things that aren't "official." However, the crashing of Fallout 3 on the newer Windows OS's is a near universal problem.
